How Are Psychologists Different From Other Therapists?

“Therapist” is a general term often used to describe a variety of licensed mental health professionals with different education and training.   Psychologists in Texas earn doctoral degrees in psychology, which includes 4-8 years of graduate education beyond college.  In addition to formal graduate study, Licensed Psychologists are required to accrue a minimum of 2 years (3500 hours) of supervised experience after completing their graduate courses. Approximately one-half of this requirement is met through a formal internship year prior to earning the doctoral degree, while a minimum of 1750 of these hours must be accrued after the doctorate is conferred.  Psychologists must also pass national and state exams to be eligible for licensure, meet annual continuing education requirements and adhere to strict professional and ethical standards.

In addition to their extensive training in understanding emotional, behavioral, interpersonal and psychological functioning and treatment, Ph.D. psychologists have considerable training in conducting and understanding research.  Their scientist-practitioner model of training is based on the importance of scientific research informing the practice of psychology, including treatment strategies, and a commitment to using these evidence-based approaches to improve lives, families, and communities.  You can learn more about psychologists here
